In a recent conversation with Martin, President and CEO of Medicab Group of Companies, M.R. shared powerful insights on the evolution of the Indian diaspora, the importance of cultural values, and the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping industries worldwide. Martin observed, “We’re seeing the rise of the Indian-American and Indian-European power class.” M.R. Rangaswami explained this as three distinct waves:
The first wave in the 1800s involved labor migration during British colonialism, where many Indians worked in plantations and railways out of necessity.
The second wave, in the 1990s, brought skilled professionals—engineers, doctors, IT specialists—seeking better opportunities in North America and Europe.
The current wave features highly educated, entrepreneurial leaders—tech CEOs, Ivy League graduates, and billionaires—thriving in global innovation hubs from Dubai to San Francisco.
Education: More Than Degrees — A Foundation for Leadership
“Indian parents see a bachelor’s degree almost like finishing high school,” M.R. quipped, “But a master’s or PhD—that’s dinner party conversation!” Education remains a cultural cornerstone, emphasizing discipline and strong values.
However, the younger generation is expanding their ambitions—moving beyond corporate careers into public service, community leadership, and social impact. “It’s about giving back and being recognized not just as business leaders but as societal changemakers,” he emphasized.
M.R. noted how formal education intertwines with cultural grounding—spirituality, family traditions, and community involvement. He pointed out the low divorce rates tied to the tradition of arranged marriages, highlighting the deep roots of family stability.
“Stability at home shapes not just academic success but the foundation for strong relationships and resilient communities,” he said.
Indian immigrants contribute significantly worldwide—as doctors, teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and public servants. Yet, M.R. lamented how media narratives often overlook their positive impact. He urged governments and media to spotlight these stories to build greater respect and understanding. “Recognizing immigrants’ dedication to healthcare, education, tech, and civic life strengthens society as a whole.”
Reflecting on his tech journey, M.R. said, “I’ve seen the rise of computers, the mobile explosion, and now AI—the biggest shift yet.” AI is transforming every sector, from transportation and healthcare to finance and education.
“To stay relevant, we must embrace change and reskill constantly,” he warned. “The AI-driven future belongs to those ready to learn and innovate.”
Starting with just $8 in his pocket and no safety net, M.R. credits his success to surrounding himself with purpose-driven people who challenge and uplift him, following his conscience, and finding mentors who tell hard truths. He shared a key insight: “Our success lies in adapting to complexity, thinking in nuance, and outworking challenges strategically—not just hustling blindly.”
